Origin Of Durian Duri Hitam @ D200

The parent tree of Durian Duri Hitam comes from Kampung Lima Kongsi, near Sungai Bakap which is located south of Penang’s second bridge. Back in the days, Bagi Kau fell in love the taste of a durian in Thailand, hence, he brought the seed of it back to Malaysia – Kampung Lima Kongsi, near Sungai Bakap, which is near the south of the second bridge. Duri Hitam became so popular till the extent that it had a waiting list every season, usually in late July or early August. At that point of time, Bagi Kau rejected people’s request to allow them to grow it on their farms.

In the mid-1980s, the owner gave permission to his friend, Leow Cheok Keong, to plant the seeds in his farm in Nibong Tebal which became the first commercial Durian Duri Hitam farm. However, according to Leow, when the first trees began to produce fruit, the results were not encouraging where they had a sweet taste and the contents lacked the creamy fat structure and rather intoxicating taste. He decided to leave the plant but did not invest capital to grow the company.

What’s The Taste Of Duri Hitam Like?

If you like the taste of Musang King, you should definitely try Duri Hitam too! It has a hint of bitterness, tastes creamy, has a rosy orange shade and some wrinkles. Each section of the durian usually contains two seeds. The durian is also soft, smooth, and aromatic. Comparing it to Red Prawn durian, Duri Hitam is firmer and sweeter.

According to Mr Leow, the flavour of Duri Hitam varies with the age of the tree. Trees which are more matured will bear a more flavourful Duri Hitam. It will also have a deeper colour and the fruits will become a little flatter. When compared with Musang King, Duri Hitam is less filling, thus gaining popularity among the people despite it having a bitter taste. Additionally, Duri Hitam is fiberless and sticky.
